SmartGo One in German and Japanese
You can now switch the language in SmartGo One to German or Japanese (Settings > Language). More languages are in the works. If you or somebody you know would be interested and qualified in translating it to French or Korean, please let me know.
The user manual (Books > Tutorial & Help > User Manual) has also been translated. If you have not read it yet (in any language), I promise you’ll learn something new.
SmartGo at the Go Congress
I had the honor of giving the keynote address at the US Go Congress in Estes Park, talking about SmartGo history as well as SmartGo One. Recording games using the new Tournament Mode seemed to work well, with lots of iPads and iPhones with green stripes visible. Here’s me recording one of my games. (I’ve gotten myself into some trouble in that game, but managed to win in the end.)
I also gave a more informal talk going through many of the features of SmartGo One; I plan to do that again next year. It was great to see how players use the app and hear about the issues they run into.
Tips & tricks
Some small features you might not be aware of:
- You can swipe left on a problem in the list of problems to either Reset it to solve it again, or mark it as Solved.
- In the Pro Games tab, SmartGo saves any annotations you add in the main line, but it doesn’t save variations. If you want to study a pro game in depth, tap and hold on that pro game in the list, choose Copy SGF, then switch to My Files, tap on + at the top, then Paste SGF to add that game to your collection.
- Note that you can zoom in or out in the tree view using a two-finger pinch. On the iPad, in Settings > Layout & Appearance, you can also switch the tree view to be shown on the side, rather than below the board.
